ERIN WENT INTO THE house long enough to retrieve her messages. As expected, none were from Andy. She felt terrible for lashing out at him at the hospital, and knew the more time she let pass; the harder it would be to apologize.

On that thought, she grabbed her bike helmet from the counter, locked the house, and retrieved her bike from the garage.

“Going somewhere?”

She turned at the familiar voice of her brother-in-law. “As a matter of fact, I was coming to see you.”

“Then I saved you a trip. Can we talk?”

He followed her into the house and sat at the counter while she put on a pot of coffee. “The reason ...”

She cut him off. “I’m sorry, Andy.” She went over and hugged him.

He smiled. “So am I. I shouldn’t have put you on the spot like that, especially after the day you had.”

She stepped back and crossed her arms in front of her. “That doesn’t excuse my behavior. I honestly don’t know what came over me, Andy. I feel terrible.”

“Two years filled with anger and bitterness probably had a lot to do with it,” he said as he tilted his head slightly.

“Yeah.” She sat down across from him. “I guess I thought by lashing out at you, it would somehow make the pain go away.”

“What pain is that, Erin?”

She hesitated. She really didn’t want to get into this, but knew he deserved an explanation. “The pain of God ignoring my pleas for answers.”

“He’s not ignoring your pleas. You’re just not listening. When you shut yourself off, it’s hard to hear Him when He’s speaking to you.”

Deep down, she knew he was right, but she didn’t know what to do about it. She had been angry for so long. It wasn’t like she could just push a button to make it stop. “I can’t come back to your church, Andy. There are just too many memories there.”

He reached across the counter and wrapped his hand around hers. “Then find another church. You don’t even have to find a church, just open up the communication lines. You know that God isn’t confined to a building. You can seek him out wherever you are.”

“I know. It just hasn’t been that easy.” She stood, poured two cups of coffee, and set one down in front of him. “You see, Andy, I’ve been struggling with God a long time. Ben’s death was the tip of the iceberg.”

“You mean because of your childhood, and other things that have happened in your life.”

She nodded. “I know I’m no exception, that others have had lives just as difficult. The Bible is full of them. But when it happens to you personally, it’s sometimes difficult to accept gracefully.”

“Then that’s what you need to pray for. You need to ask God for the grace to accept the things you can not change.” He took a quick sip of his coffee and then met her gaze.

“The prayer of serenity?”

“Next to the Lord’s Prayer, I can think of none better.”

She smiled. “Maybe you’re right.
